Niles man arrested for allegedly assaulting repo man with vehicle

SOUTH BEND — A Niles man was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated assault Friday after allegedly driving a car into a man who had come to a South Bend house to repossess the vehicle, according to city police.

Michael Watson, 23, of the 500 block of Imus Street in Mishawaka, was treated at Memorial Hospital for injuries suffered in the incident, police said.

Police were called to the 1800 block of East Randolph Street about 4 p.m. Friday on a report of an injury accident. They arrived to find Watson in the street being treated by paramedics.

A co-worker of Watson’s told police the two were assigned to repossess a vehicle from a home in the 1900 block of East Randolph. While they were preparing to remove the vehicle, a man at the address jumped in the car and started driving away, the co-worker told officers.

The man drove the vehicle into Watson, who flew across the hood and struck his head on the windshield, cracking the glass, the co-worker told police. Watson clung to the vehicle for two blocks before he slipped off near the intersection of Randolph and Sampson Street, his co-worker told police.

The driver called police from a location on Miami Street and reported he had been in an accident. He told officers two unknown men showed up at the residence and started jumping on his car, so he drove away. He denied striking anyone with the vehicle. He was arrested.

Watson’s co-worker took possession of the vehicle.
