    Repo man describes first day

SOUTH BEND — Michael Watson's first day on the job started easy enough, or so he thought: Repossess a car from a man who had always cooperated in the past.

It ended, however, with a trip to the hospital.

In between, he was hit by a car and taken for a ride for two blocks on its hood before being thrown into the street.

Believe it or not, he still wants to be a repo man.

That crazy day on Oct. 24 started when Watson and his co-worker, who declined to give his name for this story, knocked on a man's door in the 1900 block of East Randolph Street. They told him they needed the keys to take his 2000 Chrysler 300M — the ninth time the co-worker said he has repossessed from the man, none of which led to altercations.

The man complied and told the pair he needed some things out of the back seat, which the employees of South Bend-based Customer Recovery agreed to.

"He was real nice about it," Watson recalled.

As Watson, 23, and his co-worker stood in front of the car, they said the man jumped into the driver's seat and drove right into them, causing Watson to fly over the hood and hit his head on the windshield. Watson clung to the hood for two more blocks at about 35 mph.

Watson said the man was going to crash into a car to throw him off, before he realized it was a parked St. Joseph County police cruiser. Because the man slowed down for this, Watson was able to jump off the car and into the street.

His brush with death, though, has not discouraged him from wanting to do this job. "You do what you got to do," he said.
