BROWNSTOWN TWP. — A resident faces two counts of felonious assault and one count of attempted resisting/obstructing police after he allegedly swung a baseball bat while threatening a 33rd District Court officer and struggled with at least three police officers during his arrest.

Raymond Hollis James Jr., 57, was arraigned via video July 6 in 33rd District Court. Bond was set at $6,000/10 percent, which he posted.

A preliminary examination of the evidence against him had been set for yesterday, but was adjourned to Aug. 28.

Police were called to the 24000 block of West Road at about 4:45 p.m. July 5.

The court officer was wearing a chain police badge and a holstered gun. He had a court order to seize and sell James’ truck. A tow truck driver was nearby.

When a police officer arrived, he separated the three and asked the court officer what had happened.

According to the report, the court officer asked a man at the house to get James for him. The report said the man went into the house and returned, saying James was not home, and then walked away from the house.

The court officer began pounding on the door, but no one responded. Sensing that James was inside, the court officer told the tow truck driver to get ready to tow James’ truck.

At that point, the report says, James came out of the house carrying the baseball bat and yelling.

Saying that he believed he “was in danger,” the court officer said he pulled his gun and ordered James to drop the bat. He also told the tow truck driver to run away, which he did.

The court officer called police and all three men remained there until police arrived.

The report says James continued yelling that they were not going to get his truck.

As police attempted to arrest James, he resisted and officers had to put two sets of handcuffs on him. The report says James tried at least twice to spin around on the officers, would not cooperate while walking to the patrol car and resisted getting inside.

The tow truck driver also told police he felt threatened.
