TRAVERSE CITY — A jury could be asked to decide whether a Kingsley man assaulted a woman who tried to repossess his car.

Roy Soper, 45, faces one count of assault and battery from a July 14 incident along East County Line Road. That's when two Northern Asset Recovery agents turned up, bank paperwork in hand, to take possession of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's Capt. Chris Clark said deputies that night received a call about an assault in progress. He said they contacted the recovery company owners, who told them Soper assaulted one of them when they tried to repossess the car.

"The suspect was not at (the) scene when we got there," Clark said.

Prosecutors charged Soper in the incident. An 86th District Court jury selection is scheduled for Oct. 21.

A police report states one repossession agent told deputies Soper jumped into the vehicle's front seat and "he began hitting her arm repeatedly attempting to get the keys, which were in the ignition."

The report states Soper drove the vehicle forward into a tree and then away from the scene. Deputies weren't able to track him down that night to ask questions about the reported assault.

Soper's attorney Shawn Worden didn't return a call for comment.
